Reptiles and Other Fauna of the Serra de Sintra
A peaceful and educational experience, ideal for those who enjoy nature, observation, and small yet meaningful discoveries in the great outdoors.
Discovering the Reptiles of Sintra
In spring, reptiles become more active, offering an excellent opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat. We invite you to join a guided walk between the Quintinha e Tapada de Monserrate, dedicated to discovering these animals and other species that inhabit the Serra de Sintra.
Throughout the activity, we will explore the diversity of the region’s fauna, with a special focus on reptiles—a group with millions of years of evolutionary history, known for their remarkable adaptability. Despite this, they currently face several threats, such as changes in land use and the introduction of exotic species, which contribute to population fragmentation and habitat loss.
The Serra de Sintra, which served as a refuge during the Ice Age, remains an area of great importance for the conservation of these animals, due to its richness in reptile species at a national level.
Accompanied by biologist Francisco Aguilar, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to identify some of the most representative species of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, such as the Iberian water lizard, the ladder snake, and the grass snake. Topics such as their behavior, diet, reproduction, and ecology will also be explored.
An activity focused on observation, knowledge, and appreciation of local biodiversity.
