Experience an unforgettable moment at the Gala of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, where the tradition and elegance of classical equestrian art come to life. Immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the 18th-century Portuguese court, among Alter Real horses, gala-dressed riders, and moments of pure artistry and emotion.
A Journey into the Splendour of the Portuguese Court
Attend a Gala of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art. An unforgettable performance that recreates a moment from the 18th-century Portuguese court.
Lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, the show features riders in full gala attire, including the black felt tricorne hat, a long Bordeaux velvet coat with black collar and gold-and-black braid, and black leather boots.
The horses, of the Alter Real Lusitano breed, are presented with traditional three-strand Portuguese braids adorned with silk ribbons, and saddled with Portuguese tack covered in antelope hide or suede. They perform characteristic Baroque-era exercises such as the “high airs” and “court games”, tournaments practiced between the 18th and 19th centuries during festive occasions.
Recognised as National Heritage and one of the finest in the world, the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art continues the legacy of the Royal Equestrian Academy founded by King D. João V in the 18th century. Its performances are a recreation of one of the court’s favourite pastimes: equestrian art.
Preparatory activities for the Gala can be observed at the Páteo da Nora, in front of the Picadeiro Henrique Calado, one hour before the show begins.
