Rising above this dramatic setting is Cabo da Roca Lighthouse, which has stood watch over the coast for more than 250 years.

Step inside the lighthouse and explore its interpretation centre, where you can discover the history of this remarkable place and the vital role lighthouses have played in maritime navigation. Outside, take in the horizon from different viewpoints and extend your experience with a break at the café.

Commissioned by a royal charter issued on 1 February 1758 during the government of the Marquis of Pombal, Cabo da Roca Lighthouse began operating in 1772. It is one of the oldest in Portugal and the second-oldest lighthouse still in operation along the Portuguese coast.

Nearby, a stone cross marks this land’s-end location and evokes the words of Luís de Camões: “Where the land ends and the sea begins.” For centuries, its position at the edge of the known world inspired stories, legends and a fascination with the unknown. Today, it remains a place where history, landscape and the Atlantic meet.

• Public transport: Bus no. 1253 (Carris Metropolitano) from Sintra railway station; Bus no. 1624 (Carris Metropolitano) via Cascais.
• By car: You can reach Cabo da Roca Lighthouse via the EN-247 from Cascais or from Colares.
• Walking routes: There are several marked walking trails from Cascais, Colares, and the Sintra Mountains.
