From the Town to the Hills: The Pena Trail
Start at the National Palace of Sintra and follow the walking route that links the Historic Centre to the Sintra Hills, passing through Sassetti Villa and the Moorish Castle before entering Pena Park through the Lakes Entrance. A journey through some of Sintra’s most remarkable places, where heritage, nature and landscape reveal themselves every step of the way.
Discover Sintra on a walking route that connects the Historic Centre with the Sintra Hills, taking you through some of the places that best reveal the unique relationship between heritage, nature and landscape.
The experience begins at the National Palace of Sintra, in the heart of the Historic Centre, a former residence of the Portuguese monarchy and an unmistakable presence in Sintra’s historic landscape.
From here, continue on foot towards the hills, passing through Sassetti Villa, as the urban setting of the town gradually gives way to the distinctive vegetation of the Sintra Hills.
The route continues to the Moorish Castle, perched on one of the hilltops. Its walls follow the contours of the landscape and offer outstanding views over the town, the hills and the surrounding countryside.
After visiting the Castle, continue towards Pena Park, entering through the Lakes Entrance. Created in the 19th century around the Pena Palace, the park features winding paths, lakes, fountains and an extraordinary variety of plant species, in a landscape designed according to Romantic ideals.
Lasting approximately 3 hours, “From the Town to the Hills: The Pena Trail” offers a different way to discover Sintra: walking between monuments and through the landscape that connects them and gives them meaning.

Important information
The route starts at the National Palace of Sintra. Before setting off, please go to the Palace ticket office to collect your Sintra Magic reusable aluminium bottle (400 ml) and the information needed to follow the route.
This route is completed mainly on foot and includes uphill sections, changes in elevation and different types of paving. Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for the weather conditions are recommended.
The ticket includes admission to Pena Park, but does not include admission to the interior of the National Palace of Pena.
