Chinese porcelain and contemporary art in Sintra
Albuquerque Foundation
Discover an internationally significant collection of Chinese export porcelain and a space dedicated to the dialogue between ceramics, contemporary art, architecture and landscape, just outside historic Sintra.
The finest collection of Chinese export porcelain in Portugal — and undoubtedly one of the finest collections in the world — comprises more than 2,600 pieces focused on the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties and is located at the Albuquerque Foundation, at the entrance of Sintra. The Foundation’s spectacular space, spread over 12,000 m², recently inaugurated and restored by the famous Bernardes architecture studio, also features an ambitious programme of Portuguese and international contemporary art exhibitions dedicated to ceramics, a shop for local artist-made ceramics, a restaurant with stunning views, an artist-in-residence programme, and various workshops and activities dedicated to this field. A project of the patron and collector Renato de Albuquerque and a mandatory stop for anyone visiting Lisbon and its surroundings.
