A Night in the Garden

Discover the secret world of bats in the Gardens of National Palace of Queluz. Join a guided experience and learn about the essential role these animals play in nature.

Discovering the Bats of Queluz

During the time of Queen Maria I, Palace of Queluz was the setting for celebrations that continued into the evening across its illuminated gardens. But when the music ended and silence returned, it was the bats that flew over the lakes, hedges and statues. Did they go unnoticed by the eyes of the court?

As part of the International Bat Night celebrations, this activity invites you to discover the only flying mammals and the important role they play in urban ecosystems. Through an indoor session, we will learn about the species that inhabit Portugal, their biology, the myths that still surround them today, and why they are essential for maintaining nature’s balance.

As night falls, we will venture into the gardens at the Palace of Queluz in search of the bats that find shelter and food here. Using an ultrasonic detector, it will be possible to hear the sounds they use to navigate and hunt.

This is an opportunity to discover the hidden biodiversity of a historic garden, challenge misconceptions about bats, and understand why their conservation is essential for the balance of ecosystems. Getting to know them is the first step towards protecting them.
