The exotic dream of a visionary

Park and Palace of Monserrate

A Romantic masterpiece: lush gardens with exotic species from across the world and a palace that blends diverse influences — shaped by Francis Cook’s vision and architect James Knowles Jr.

A Romantic masterpiece in Sintra

Monserrate was a retreat for writers and captivated foreign travellers — especially from Britain — who praised its beauty in travel accounts and engravings. When Francis Cook, a 19th-century English industrialist and art collector, visited the site, he was captivated. From that passion came today’s Monserrate: an exuberant park and a palace that celebrates Romantic architecture.
In the Park, winding paths lead through shifting atmospheres and themed gardens — from the Fern Valley to the Japanese Garden, passing the Beckford Waterfall and unexpected arches and viewpoints. Inside the Palace, a refined sequence of rooms reveals the intention behind this coherent “exotic dream”.
