Amphibians and Other night Fauna
Explore the Serra de Sintra at dusk and discover amphibians and nocturnal wildlife with biologist Francisco Aguilar.
The Serra de Sintra at Dusk
After the autumn walks, we return to Park of Pena after hours to explore the world of amphibians.
Early spring marks the breeding season, which began in winter. In the park’s streams, ponds, and pools, we may find species such as the northern crested newt, the fire salamander, the Iberian green frog, and the common toad. Amphibians play a key role in ecosystem balance. As bioindicators, they provide important information about the ecological health of their habitats. They are also essential prey for many predators and help control plant pests. They are the most threatened group of animals in the world due to global warming, habitat destruction, and disease.
Together with biologist Francisco Aguilar, we will learn to identify the main species of the Serra de Sintra and discover their ecology, behavior, life cycle, and curious facts. Beyond amphibians, other animals also become active at dusk. Let’s explore amphibians and other nocturnal wildlife of the Serra de Sintra.
